Both Amadou and Mariam faced adversity early in life as they both lost their sight. Amadou lost his vision at the age of 16, while Mariam became blind at the age of 5 as a consequence of untreated measles. Despite these challenges, their remarkable talent and love for music led them to meet and form a powerful musical partnership.

Amadou and Mariam first crossed paths at Mali’s Institute for Young Blind, where they both performed at the institute’s Eclipse Orchestra, directed by Idrissa Soumaouro. It was here that they discovered their shared passion for music and embarked on a journey that would define their careers.

In the early years, the duo’s recordings featured sparse arrangements of guitar and voice, showcasing their raw talent and emotional depth. However, it was in the late 1990s that Amadou and Mariam began to experiment with their sound, incorporating elements of traditional Mali music with rock guitars, Syrian violins, Cuban trumpets, Egyptian ney, Indian tablas, and Dogon percussion. This unique fusion of styles has been referred to as “Afro-blues,” and it has become their signature sound.
