Nigeria’s Afrobeats queen Tiwa Savage shines in acting debut

Tiwa Savage, the renowned Afrobeats queen, has made her much-anticipated acting debut in the film “Water & Garri” on Prime Video.

However, her desire to explore the world of acting has lingered within her for years. In a recent interview with CNN, Savage revealed that acting was her first love before music, highlighting her commitment to pursuing this new venture.

Water & Garri,” executive produced by Savage and directed by Meji Alabi, is a visual masterpiece that showcases Savage’s acting skills in a gripping narrative.

The film, originally conceived as a visual album for her EP of the same name, evolved into a standalone project with its own identity.

Written by Comfort Emmanuel, the story follows Aisha, played by Savage, a fashion designer who returns to her hometown in Ghana after a family tragedy, only to find a community plagued by violence and tension.

Savage’s performance in “Water & Garri” has been met with critical acclaim, showcasing her versatility as an artist. Her portrayal of Aisha is both captivating and emotive, drawing viewers into the character’s journey of self-discovery and resilience.

The film’s setting in a fictional town on the Cape Coast of Ghana adds depth to the storyline, exploring themes of family, identity, and societal challenges.

In the process of preparing for her role as Aisha in the film, Tiwa Savage not only had to physically train in London but also emotionally detach herself from her own identity as a superstar.

As she delved into the character of Aisha, Savage found herself confronting her own past and guilt, drawing parallels to her own life experiences.

Pushing herself to break out of her shell, Savage embraced the challenge of embodying a whole different character on screen.

As the production progressed, Savage not only shed her superstar persona but also decided to create an original soundtrack for the movie, deviating from the initial musical inspiration.

This new soundtrack allowed Savage to experiment with her vocal abilities and explore different musical genres, breaking free from the sound that had defined her for over a decade.

The album served as a transformative journey for Tiwa Savage, allowing her to break free from the constraints of her established sound and explore new musical territories.

Collaborating with artists like Asa, Zacardi Cortez, and Richard Bona & The Cavemen on different tracks opened up a world of possibilities for the singer to showcase her versatility and talent in various genres.

Embracing folk, jazz, and gospel music, Savage found a renewed sense of freedom and creativity in her artistry. Through this project, she came to realize the extent of her growth as an artist and the potential for limitless expression.
