How Nancy Obonyo went from the classroom to the boardroom

Nancy Akoth Obonyo’s journey from the classroom to the boardroom is truly an inspiring tale of resilience, determination, and hard work.

After facing the harsh reality of unemployment in Kenya for two long years, Nancy made a bold decision to pursue a Master’s degree in Bangkok, Thailand in hopes of enhancing her employability.

Studying in Bangkok proved to be a turning point in Nancy’s life. Soon after completing her Master’s degree, she landed a job as a market research analyst at a start-up. Despite the low pay, Nancy saw this opportunity as a stepping stone towards her career goals.

In a bid to further expand her horizons, Nancy also took up a teaching job at a primary school in Bangkok.

This role not only allowed her to gain valuable experience but also helped her blend her passion for education with her knowledge in the field of chemical engineering.

Reflecting on her journey, Nancy shared, “After struggling to find employment in Kenya, I took a leap of faith and pursued further studies in Bangkok.

This decision opened up new doors for me and eventually led me to secure a job as a market research analyst. I later transitioned into teaching, a role that I continue to cherish.”

Nancy Obonyo, a former teacher, decided to start her entrepreneurial journey despite having a stable job at a school.

The desire to have multiple sources of income led her to explore various business ideas, including selling diffusers, scented candles, and essential oils.

However, she ultimately chose to establish her clothing brand, Nalelek Collection. This decision was influenced by the ease of sourcing clothing from Thailand and the potential market for her products in Kenya.

The name Nalelek, which means “simple” in Maasai, reflects the essence of her brand: simple, elegant, casual, and chic.

Nancy’s designs are versatile and suitable for both office and social settings. She expressed her long-standing ambition to run her own business and emphasized the importance of having more than one source of income.

Nancy’s determination and entrepreneurial spirit have driven her to pursue her dreams and establish a successful brand that resonates with her ethos and values.

Despite being told that as a female black engineer, she was guaranteed a job, she faced challenges upon returning to Kenya after graduation.

Her story is a familiar one for many young professionals who find themselves in a competitive job market despite their qualifications and hard work.

In a bold move, Nancy announced her decision to pursue a Master’s in Global Affairs in the United States, hoping to shift her career towards a more mission-driven path.

Her determination and willingness to take risks are inspiring, especially as she joins the ranks of other Kenyan female entrepreneurs who have ventured into establishing their ventures abroad.

Nancy’s story highlights the importance of perseverance and resilience in the face of obstacles, and serves as a beacon of hope for those who are navigating their own career paths.
