Nearly one million Kenyan teenagers awoke to a pivotal moment on Friday as Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migosi Ogamba officially released the 2025 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results, marking another milestone in the nation’s education journey.
Speaking at AIC Chebisas High School in Eldoret, Ogamba announced that 993,226 candidates who sat the exams late last year can now retrieve their individual results. The release brought relief to students, parents and teachers who had waited anxiously since the examinations concluded in November.
Performance showed modest improvement. A total of 270,715 candidates attained a mean grade of C+ or higher, qualifying them for direct university entry – up from 246,391 the previous year. More than half a million – 507,131 – scored C- and above, compared to 476,889 in 2024. Overall, 634,082 achieved D+ and above, reflecting broader access to post-secondary opportunities.
Ogamba attributed the grading to the reviewed system introduced in 2023, which calculates the overall grade based on Mathematics, the best language subject (English, Kiswahili or Kenyan Sign Language), and the top five other subjects. “This approach ensures a fairer reflection of students’ strengths,” he said.
For many candidates in rural areas or with limited internet access, the quickest way to check results remains via SMS.
To access 2025 KCSE results by SMS:
– Compose a new message on your phone.
– Type your full index number (as it appeared on your exam registration, typically 11 digits).
– Send the message to the official shortcode 20076.
– You will receive a reply with your grade breakdown shortly after.
– Note that each SMS costs KSh 25, and the service is available across all major networks, including Safaricom, Airtel and Telkom. Delays may occur during peak hours due to high traffic.
This method has proven reliable in past years, allowing instant access without needing data or a smartphone.
Alternatively, candidates can use the online portal for a detailed result slip:
1. Visit https://results.knec.ac.ke directly or through the KNEC website.
2. Enter your index number and at least one registered name.
3. Accept the privacy notice.
4. Submit to view and download your provisional results.
Ogamba urged caution against fake links circulating on social media, emphasising only official KNEC channels. Schools will also receive printed result slips, and final certificates will now be collected from sub-county education offices to avoid delays over unpaid fees.
As Kenya transitions towards the Competency-Based Curriculum, the 2025 cohort represents one of the last under the 8-4-4 system. For these young Kenyans, the results open doors to universities, technical colleges or the job market – a defining step in their futures.
