Uganda Airlines Launches Direct Route to Mumbai

Uganda Airlines, the national carrier of Uganda, has officially launched direct route from Mumbai to Entebbe after a four-decade hiatus.

This significant milestone not only opens a new chapter in the country’s aviation industry but also promises a range of opportunities for business, tourism, and cultural exchange between Uganda and India.

Starting from October 7, 2023, Ugandans will have the privilege of taking a direct flight from Entebbe, Uganda’s main international airport, to Mumbai, the bustling commercial hub of India. This means that individuals can indulge in a delicious dinner in Kampala, the capital city of Uganda, and wake up to a scrumptious breakfast in Mumbai the next morning. The direct route will make travel more convenient and time-efficient for both business and leisure travelers.

The launch of this direct route is a testament to Uganda Airlines’ commitment to enhancing air connectivity for its citizens and visitors. By bridging the gap between these two vibrant nations, the airline aims to foster economic growth, strengthen partnerships, and encourage cultural exchange between Uganda and India.

Furthermore, this development holds particular significance due to the tumultuous history between Uganda and the Indian community. In August 1972, Idi Amin, the then ruler of Uganda, forcibly expelled the Indian population residing in Uganda. This mass expulsion, which affected around 80,000 Indians, was fueled by Amin’s misguided allegations, accusing them of draining Uganda’s resources and engaging in fraudulent practices.

The expulsion of the Indian community left a deep impact on Uganda, and the wounds inflicted by this event took a considerable amount of time to heal. However, both countries have made substantial progress in rebuilding their relationship over the years. The launch of the direct route to Mumbai is yet another step toward fostering a stronger bond between Uganda and India.

Uganda Airlines together with Grant Thorton announced the launch of a direct flight to Mumbai-India starting September 2023 to the Indian Community at that was hosted at Uganda Airlines for a breakfast treat in readiness of the milestone.

The direct route between Entebbe and Mumbai will undoubtedly facilitate greater trade and investment opportunities. It is expected to boost business ties between the two nations, allowing Ugandan and Indian entrepreneurs to explore new markets and collaborate on mutually beneficial ventures. This increased connectivity will enable the exchange of goods, services, and ideas, laying a solid foundation for a thriving commercial relationship.

In addition to the economic benefits, the direct route will also stimulate tourism in both Uganda and India. Travelers from Mumbai can now easily access Uganda’s incredible wildlife, rich cultural heritage, and varied landscapes. Similarly, Ugandan tourists can explore the vibrant streets of Mumbai, visit iconic landmarks, and immerse themselves in India’s diverse culture.

Historically, Indians had a strong presence in Uganda, particularly in the workforce. In the 1890s, the British brought nearly 40,000 Indians to Uganda as immigrant workers to construct the Uganda Railway. Many of these individuals subsequently found employment in the banking and sartorial industries.

Over time, Uganda has managed to restore its relationship with India, culminating in the recent 50th anniversary of the expulsion last August. Presently, it is estimated that there are approximately 35,000 Indians currently residing in Uganda.

The launch of the Entebbe to Mumbai flights is expected to have a positive impact on trade, tourism, and foreign investment in Uganda. The route will operate three times a week, on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays. Officials are excited about the potential benefits this new transportation link will bring, as it opens up avenues for enhanced economic cooperation between the two countries.

Moreover, the travel time for approximately 1,200 Ugandan students studying in India will be significantly reduced.

The CEO of Ugandan Airlines expressed her pleasure in establishing stronger ties between the two countries. She emphasized the importance of India in fostering bilateral relations concerning trade, culture, and tourism, highlighting the excitement surrounding this development.  It is remarkable to see how Uganda has progressed since the prevalence of Indophobia half a century ago.

The launch of this direct route represents a milestone in the aviation industry for both Uganda Airlines and the nation as a whole. It signifies Uganda’s determination to strengthen its ties with countries across the globe and to position itself as a regional economic powerhouse.

The government’s investment in the aviation sector and the subsequent launch of this direct route demonstrate its commitment to facilitating economic growth and development.
