Nigeria’s former aviation minister, Hadi Sirika, has found himself in hot water as he faces serious corruption charges alongside his daughter and son-in-law.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has accused Sirika of abusing his power while in office to benefit his family members.

Sirika, who once held a prominent position in former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, is alleged to have awarded a lucrative contract to a company associated with his daughter and son-in-law.

Furthermore, Sirika is accused of providing consultancy roles to his daughter and son-in-law in the ill-fated attempt to establish a national carrier, Nigerian Air.

These actions have raised serious concerns about the misuse of public office for personal gain and have brought shame to Sirika’s once esteemed reputation.

Despite pleading not guilty to the six charges brought against them, Sirika, his daughter, and son-in-law were released on bail by the High Court in Abuja.

The prosecution, led by Rotimi Jacobs, called for strict bail conditions to be imposed, highlighting the gravity of the allegations.

The judge set the bail amount at 100 million naira each, emphasizing the seriousness of the charges and the need for accountability.

The three individuals, Mr. Sirika, ex-central bank governor Godwin Emefiele, and President Bola Tinubu, are currently facing corruption charges in Nigeria. They have been banned from traveling abroad and the case is set to resume on June 10th. Mr.

Emefiele is facing over 20 charges, including illegally receiving $6.2 million, while Mr. Sirika is the second high-profile official from the former government to be accused of corruption. Both individuals have denied the charges and are currently out on bail.

President Tinubu, who took office in May 2023, has vowed to tackle corruption in the country. Former President Buhari, who served two terms in office, stepped down before President Tinubu took over.

Mr. Sirika, who was the minister of aviation during Mr. Buhari’s term, is now facing legal implications for his alleged involvement in corrupt activities.
