Kenya, like many other countries in Africa, is no stranger to the devastating impact of flooding. With the ongoing heavy rainfall and severe storms forecasted by the meteorological department, several regions in the country have been affected, leading to the displacement of many families.
In response to this crisis, the Government of Kenya has taken a proactive approach to address the immediate needs of flood-affected families. Government Spokesperson, Isaac Mwaura, has reiterated the commitment of the government to providing emergency housing and comprehensive support services to these families.
Speaking from Sarova Whitesands, Mwaura highlighted the government’s vigilance in monitoring the ongoing long rainfall season. He emphasized the importance of mobilizing veterinary services and emergency feed supplies to support the affected pastoral communities, who are at risk of losing a significant number of livestock.
Mwaura also acknowledged the challenges posed by the heavy rainfall, including the potential damage to infrastructure such as roads, bridges, educational institutions, health facilities, and residential buildings. He assured the nation that the government has put rapid response teams on standby to conduct repairs and maintenance to ensure the continuity of essential services.
With over 100,000 households affected by the flooding, Mwaura emphasized the government’s commitment to taking necessary measures to address the situation. He called for the nation to be assured that the government has the matter under control and is prepared to deal with the challenges posed by the ongoing heavy rainfall.
In a recent statement, the Spokesperson addressed the pressing issue of livelihoods being at risk for many Kenyans, especially those in the agricultural and information sectors.
The government has taken swift action by initiating relief measures, such as financial aid and resources to support affected individuals and families. He also highlighted the threat of submersion on large acreages of farmland, which could have a significant impact on food security.
However, the Ministry of Agriculture is working tirelessly to deploy strategies and resources to mitigate these effects, including the provision of flood-resistant crop varieties and farming advisories.
Furthermore, the Spokesperson delved into other critical issues facing the country, such as the ongoing doctor’s strike. He appealed to health workers to prioritize the welfare of citizens by showing compassion and ending the strike. Stressing the importance of dialogue, he called upon all stakeholders to engage in constructive negotiations to effectively resolve the impasse.
The new targets set by the government are part of a larger initiative aimed at simplifying the process for Kenyans to access important documents such as passports and IDs.
Currently, there is a significant backlog of 700,000 individuals waiting to acquire these essential documents. The government is also focused on increasing the revenue generated from its services, with daily collections averaging at Sh1 billion through the E-Citizen digital platform.
This increase in revenue is crucial for enhancing efficiency, eliminating corruption, and ensuring that resources can be reinvested to improve the lives of Kenyans. The government is confident that these targets are achievable through strategic improvements.
In addition to this, there is a plan to boost revenue by issuing Electronic Travel Authorisations (ETA) in place of entry visas, with the goal of attracting at least 5 million visitors in the medium term.
This comprehensive approach underscores the government’s commitment to streamlining processes, increasing efficiency, and ultimately improving the lives of its citizens.
In conclusion, Kenya’s approach to addressing the needs of flood-affected families showcases the government’s proactive stance in ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens during this challenging period. By providing emergency housing, comprehensive support services, and mobilizing resources to support affected communities, the government is taking concrete steps to address the immediate needs of those impacted by the flooding.
