Kenya has secured a $3.6 billion for the construction of Africa’s first ever longest expressway dubbed the Nairobi-Mombasa expressway which is set to enhance its infrastructure development.
This project, set to be the longest expressway in Africa, will span 440 kilometers, connecting the capital city of Nairobi to the bustling port city of Mombasa.
The funding for this ambitious project was secured through a partnership between Kenya’s Highways Authority (KenHA) and U.S. infrastructure investment manager Everstrong Capital.
This partnership will see Everstrong Capital managing the entire lifecycle of the expressway, from construction to tolling and maintenance, under a 30-year concession agreement.
The Nairobi-Mombasa Expressway, also known as the Usahihi Expressway, is expected to bring significant time and cost savings to its users, while also improving the efficiency and comfort of movement of people and goods within East Africa.
This project is a game-changer for Kenya, as it represents a major investment in the country’s transportation infrastructure.
Upon completion, the Usahihi Expressway will be the largest toll road project in Africa, serving as a symbol of Kenya’s commitment to transparent and innovative infrastructure development.
This project is a testament to the strengthened partnership between the United States and Kenya, highlighting the potential for further collaboration in future infrastructure projects.
The construction of the Nairobi-Mombasa Expressway is expected to last 3-4 years, with revenue from road users financing the project.
This Public Private Partnership model will ensure that the expressway is built and maintained to the highest standards, providing a reliable and efficient transportation link between two of Kenya’s most important cities.
