The Libyan National Unity Government spokesperson, Mohammed Hammude, unequivocally stated that the claims about leasing the Al-Khums Port are false.

He emphasised that the Libyan State has not renounced control over the port and it is not being used as a military base by any foreign nation. Hammude urged the public not to be swayed by these false news reports, as they only serve to create public turmoil and instability.

The media reports that propagated these allegations were criticised for not reflecting the truth. Hammude emphasised the importance of following reliable official sources to ensure accurate information is disseminated. By relying on reputable sources, individuals can avoid the spread of misinformation and maintain a more grounded understanding of the situation.

According to media reports in Libya, there were claims that the Al-Khums Port, located approximately 100 kilometres east of the national capital of Tripoli, would be leased to Turkey as a military base. However, the Libyan government has categorically denied these claims, further reinforcing the fact that they lack any factual basis.

The refutation by the Libyan government highlights the crucial role of responsible journalism in ensuring that accurate and verified information is made available to the public. It also serves as a reminder for individuals to critically assess the sources they rely on for news and information.

Accusations of leasing a port for military purposes can have far-reaching implications for a country’s national security and international relations. Therefore, it is essential for governments and stakeholders to promptly and clearly address such allegations to prevent any potential misunderstandings or conflicts from arising.
