Zambia has taken decisive action to evacuate its nationals from Israel amidst the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

Zambia’s Foreign Minister, Stanley Kakubo announced on Thursday that 77 Zambian nationals, including 72 students, have been successfully brought back to the country. The remaining 172 Zambians, including 143 students, are still living in Israel, with some choosing to stay despite the dangerous situation.

Kakubo assured those who decided to remain in Israel that the Zambian government remains committed to their safety. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will work closely with the Zambian Embassy and the Israeli Foreign Ministry to ensure that necessary actions are taken to protect the remaining citizens. This highlights the government’s dedication to its citizens, even when they are abroad.

Furthermore, President Hakainde Hichilema had a telephone conversation with his Israeli counterpart, President Isaac Herzog, in the wake of the conflict. This demonstrates the diplomatic efforts made by the Zambian government to stay informed about the situation and ensure the safety of its citizens.

The conflict between Israel and Hamas erupted when Hamas launched Operation Al-Aqsa Flood, a surprise attack on Israel involving rocket launches and infiltrations by land, sea, and air. Hamas claimed that this action was in response to the storming of the Al-Aqsa Mosque and escalating violence by Israeli settlers. In retaliation, the Israeli military launched Operation Swords of Iron, targeting Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, has urgently appealed for an immediate cessation of hostilities, emphasising the critical need to alleviate the immense humanitarian crisis and alleviate the profound human suffering being endured. Regrettably, the number of lives lost in Gaza due to Israeli attacks has tragically reached 3,808, while in Israel, the toll stands at over 1,400 individuals.

The consequences of this violent clash are devastating for the people of Gaza. The area is experiencing a dire humanitarian crisis, with a severe shortage of electricity, water, food, fuel, and medical supplies. Innocent civilians, including children, are bearing the brunt of this conflict, caught in the crossfire between the warring factions.
