5G and Next-Generation Telecommunications in Africa

The fifth generation of mobile network technology — 5G — has generated substantial global attention for its promise of dramatically faster data speeds, much lower latency, and the capacity to connect very large numbers of devices simultaneously, enabling new applications in industrial automation, connected vehicles, smart city infrastructure, and immersive media. In Africa, 5G has arrived in commercial form in a growing number of major urban markets, though the timeline and extent of deployment is shaped by economic and infrastructure realities that distinguish African trajectories from those in higher-income markets where the technology is more rapidly advancing.

Where 5G Stands in Africa

Several African mobile operators have launched commercial 5G services in major cities, with South Africa among the first on the continent to offer live commercial 5G networks. Since then, services have been launched or announced in a number of other African markets, concentrated in the most commercially attractive urban locations where the density of high-value customers justifies significant infrastructure investment. Coverage remains very limited geographically compared to existing 4G networks, available in specific districts, campuses, and transport corridors rather than citywide, let alone nationally.

Spectrum and Regulatory Enablers

5G network deployment requires access to radio frequency spectrum in bands suitable for the technology, and allocation of this spectrum by national telecommunications regulators is a prerequisite for commercial services. Spectrum auctions and assignments for 5G-suitable frequency bands have proceeded at different paces across African countries, with some regulators having conducted competitive auctions providing operators with clear licensing frameworks for 5G investment, while others are still in planning or consultation phases. The design of spectrum licensing frameworks — how much spectrum is allocated, on what terms, to how many operators, and with what coverage obligations — significantly shapes the economics and pace of 5G deployment in each market.

The 4G Priority

A distinctive feature of the African 5G landscape is the continued importance of 4G network expansion as a more immediate connectivity priority for most of the population. While 5G launches in major cities generate technology media attention, the majority of mobile users in many African countries are still served by 3G or even 2G connections, and expanding 4G LTE coverage to currently underserved populations represents a more immediately impactful investment than 5G deployment for urban premium customers. Mobile operators must allocate capital between 4G coverage expansion, which reaches larger numbers of currently underserved users, and 5G rollout, which serves smaller numbers of existing high-value customers with higher speeds.

Industrial and Enterprise 5G Applications

The business case for 5G rests partly on consumer applications and partly on enterprise and industrial applications specifically requiring 5G capabilities. Mining operations represent one of the most cited industrial use cases in African contexts: the high bandwidth and low latency of 5G can support remote-controlled and autonomous mining equipment, real-time underground sensor networks, and high-definition video monitoring that improves safety and operational efficiency in environments where these capabilities are difficult to achieve with conventional wireless networks. Manufacturing automation, smart port operations, and connected logistics are other enterprise use cases where 5G could enable commercially valuable operational improvements.

Fixed Wireless Access

One of the most immediately practical commercial applications of 5G in African urban markets may be fixed wireless access — using 5G networks to deliver home and business broadband without requiring physical cable connections to premises. In urban areas where laying fiber or cable to individual apartments and houses is expensive or logistically complex, 5G fixed wireless access can provide broadband-quality connectivity using a simple indoor or outdoor receiver. For operators with 5G spectrum and urban infrastructure, fixed wireless access provides an additional revenue stream from the same 5G investment, and for consumers it offers an alternative to often limited fixed broadband options.

Infrastructure Sharing and Cost Reduction

The capital cost of building 5G networks is significant, as the technology requires more densely distributed radio equipment than 4G due to propagation characteristics of higher-frequency spectrum bands. Infrastructure sharing arrangements, through which multiple operators share passive and in some cases active infrastructure, can substantially reduce per-operator costs. Tower company models, in which independent companies own and manage tower infrastructure leased to multiple mobile operators, are already well-established across African markets and will play an important role in enabling cost-effective 5G rollout through shared infrastructure as the technology expands beyond initial urban deployments.

Device Availability and Consumer Readiness

The consumer benefit of 5G is realized only when users have 5G-capable handsets. While the global 5G rollout has been accompanied by rapid expansion of capable smartphone models and declining prices as the technology matures, the average selling price of 5G devices remains above that of 4G equivalents. In markets where device affordability is a significant constraint on upgrade cycles, consumer adoption of 5G may lag network rollout significantly, and operator device financing programs and natural lifecycle replacement will gradually build the 5G device base over time.

Looking Ahead

5G deployment across Africa will be gradual, market-specific, and heavily shaped by the economics of individual operator situations, spectrum availability, and the balance between 5G urban rollout and continuing 4G coverage expansion priorities. The technology’s most significant near-term economic impact is likely to come from specific enterprise and industrial applications — particularly in mining, manufacturing, and logistics — where 5G capabilities enable operational improvements with clear commercial returns, rather than from broad consumer adoption that will take longer to materialize as device costs fall and coverage expands.
