Skin Health in Africa: Common Conditions, Sun Protection, and Natural Remedies
The skin is the body’s largest organ and its first line of defence. In Africa, intense sunlight, tropical humidity, dust, and infectious agents create unique dermatological challenges. Dermatology remains severely under-resourced across much of the continent — many Africans rely on traditional remedies and unregulated cosmetic products that can cause significant harm.
Understanding African Skin
- Higher melanin provides some UV protection but does not eliminate UV damage
- African skin is prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (dark spots after acne or injury)

Common Skin Conditions
Acne Vulgaris

Tinea Versicolor
A fungal condition causing lighter or darker skin patches, mainly on chest and back. Caused by heat- and humidity-encouraged yeast overgrowth. Treated with antifungal shampoos (ketoconazole, selenium sulphide). Not contagious or related to poor hygiene.
Eczema (Atopic Dermatitis)
Chronic inflammatory condition causing dry, itchy skin. In African skin often presents with grey patches and thickened areas from scratching. Managed with petroleum jelly or shea butter moisturising, avoiding triggers (harsh soaps, dust, synthetic fabrics), and prescribed steroid creams for flares.
Skin Bleaching: A Public Health Warning
Widespread use of bleaching creams containing mercury and high-concentration hydroquinone causes mercury poisoning (kidney and neurological damage), paradoxical darkening, and permanent discolouration. Avoid any product claiming dramatic lightening without full ingredient disclosure. Safe options for dark spots include sunscreen, vitamin C serums, niacinamide, and azelaic acid under dermatological guidance.
Sun Protection for African Skin
A common misconception is that darker skin does not need sun protection. People of African descent can develop skin cancer, cataracts, and uneven pigmentation from chronic UV exposure.
- Apply broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen to exposed skin during extended outdoor time
- Wear protective clothing and wide-brimmed hats during peak sun hours (10am–4pm)
- Protect children’s skin — childhood UV exposure significantly increases lifetime cancer risk
Evidence-Supported Natural African Skincare
- Shea butter — Excellent moisturiser rich in fatty acids and vitamins A and E; safe for dry skin and eczema
- Coconut oil — Antimicrobial; good body moisturiser, though may clog pores on acne-prone facial skin
- Aloe vera — Well-documented soothing, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing properties; ideal for sunburn
- Moringa seed oil — Rich in oleic acid and antioxidants; supports skin barrier function
- Turmeric — Anti-inflammatory when used in face masks; use diluted to avoid staining
