Senegal have appointed former France international and Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira as head coach, giving the Dakar-born coach his first national team job as the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers approach.
The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) announced Vieira’s appointment on Tuesday, describing it as a “strategic move” designed to establish a high-level technical set-up in line with the country’s sporting ambitions.
Vieira replaces Thiaw
Vieira, 50, replaces Pape Thiaw, who was dismissed after Senegal’s elimination from the 2026 World Cup in the round of 32. Senegal lost 3-2 to Belgium in their final match at the tournament.
The appointment brings Vieira back to the country of his birth, although he represented France throughout his international career. He was part of the France team that won the 1998 World Cup on home soil and the Euro 2000 title, earning 107 caps for the national side.
Vieira made his professional debut with Cannes before moving to AC Milan and then Arsenal, where he became one of the Premier League’s most influential midfielders under Arsene Wenger.
He spent nine seasons with Arsenal between 1996 and 2005, winning three Premier League titles and four FA Cups before leaving for Juventus. He later played for Inter Milan and Manchester City, where he ended his playing career in 2011.
Coaching experience
His coaching career began with New York City FC in Major League Soccer in 2016. He subsequently managed French club Nice, Premier League side Crystal Palace, Strasbourg and Italian club Genoa.
The Senegal job represents a new challenge for Vieira, who has previously worked primarily at club level. His immediate task will be to restore stability to a team that entered 2026 with high expectations but exited the World Cup earlier than anticipated.
For Senegal, the appointment also carries symbolic weight. Vieira’s career was built in European football, but his roots in Dakar offer a link to a country whose national team has become one of Africa’s leading sides. The federation will expect that experience to translate into greater consistency and renewed confidence ahead of a demanding qualifying programme.
AFCON title dispute
Senegal will also be seeking to settle the controversy surrounding the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, after the Confederation of African Football awarded the title to Morocco following a disputed final.
Senegal appeared to have won the final against Morocco, but the match was interrupted by a walk-off involving Senegalese players and staff. CAF later ruled in Morocco’s favour, prompting the Senegalese federation to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
The dispute remains unresolved and could add further pressure to Vieira as he prepares to lead the Lions of Teranga into another AFCON campaign.
2027 AFCON qualifiers
Senegal have been drawn in Group J of the 2027 AFCON qualifiers alongside Mozambique, Sudan and Ethiopia. The first two matchdays are scheduled during the September-October international window, with the remaining fixtures to follow in November and March 2027.
The 2027 AFCON finals will be hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda from June 19 to July 17, giving Senegal an added regional dimension to its qualification campaign.
Vieira’s official presentation and the details of his technical staff will be announced later by the FSF. His appointment gives Senegal a coach with elite playing credentials, European club experience and a personal connection to the country as it begins preparations for its next continental campaign.
